After finding the Blu-Ray for this series for rent at Bay Video (amazing place, by the way), I decided to finally start watching this old anime people reference all the time as one of the greats (up there with others from that era, like Ghost in the Shell or Cowboy Bebop).

Just 2 episodes in but so far seems interesting. As I understand it, this one takes a while to get going and eventually gets interesting, albeit depressing.

In terms of the basic plot, it is the classic "teenagers piloting giant robots to fight alien monsters". You know, a tale as old as "boy meets girl".

It will probably be quite a long road, as the series is broken up over 3 rentals (6 disks - 2 in each).

Other than that, the new OP "items are entities in the world" change seems to be working well. Now I need to cut-over all the old "items on the ground are a block inventory" design to this new approach, which won't be complicated, but will be quite gruelling as there will be tendrils of that everywhere so some whack-a-mole will be involved.

At least the static compilation of Java makes that easier. I don't know how people make large-scale design changes in those runtime-only languages.
