Something I have complained about for years is how I dislike the way that modern culture pathologizes everything and everyone. We no longer feel down or lonely, we are only depressed. We no longer have a hard time communicating our thoughts, we are autistic. We no longer have a bad memory, we have trauma.
Uggh, those terms are almost never correct so can we please stop using them in this reductionist way! Leave diagnoses to those who specialize in it!
It is annoying since it means that expressing how I actually feel or communicating what I am actually thinking has become a process which requires planning so that I don't accidentally stray too close to one of these over-pathologized terms (either using them, directly, as a figurative idea, or just sounding similar enough that the listener is drawn onto that track).
I have also noticed it when people discuss media, which sucks the life and meaning out of said media, as far as I am concerned. When I am interested in character motivations, thought processes, or circumstances, I find it horribly deflating when someone reduces it into a vague label or places a simple judgment upon them.
On that note, the less said at about meta-textual distractions, the better.
