A good tool should be an extension of your body
I don't have any great insight into this one but I wanted to point out something which we sometimes miss in the software world, especially in the internet age, despite it being something we all realize, at least on some level.

Historically, we viewed a tool as an extension to our body. When driving in a nail, one instinctively picks up a hammer without even thinking about it, and the hammer does what we want.

Unfortunately, much software today seems to be actively fighting against the user. Much of this seems to be that it was pitched on being "trendy" instead of "useful" and often there are constraints due to the provider's business model, regulatory difficulties, real technical limitations, etc.

Of course, decentralized systems easily run into these problems, as well. This "elegance of use" is something I would consider a good example of a real problem those of us working in this space are seeking to improve. How can we build something which seems just natural or obvious and which benefits from its design goals, as opposed to being limited by those while trying to be something else?

I don't have much insight to offer beyond just pointing out that "it could probably be better" and to remember to replace tools which actively make your life difficult.

A keyboard is great, but if the software taking the input is making the tool into a chore, a pencil and paper always work,
Jeff.
